What Inspired Safer Outside Project?
“A few months ago, I attended the Celebration of Life for a beloved family member. My husband’s step-grandmother, Carol. When the leaders of her church spoke about her, they placed great emphasis on the efforts she had made to give back to the community. I found that very touching, and I wanted to honor her by continuing her work. At that time, though, I didn’t have an idea in mind of what I wanted to do.
A few weeks later, I was at my husband’s office with him. His office overlooks White Rock Creek. Every time I am there, I see someone bathing or washing their clothes in the creek. This time was no different. I saw a man cleaning his body in the creek, and my mind went to how dangerous that could be. Washing in city creek water puts him at risk of water-borne illness. If he is washing his clothes in the creek, that puts him at risk of developing illness from using damp towels or putting on damp clothes. Not to mention the fact that he is probably not using freshwater-safe soap, which could hurt wildlife. I thought there must be a better way.
There are community outreach programs that provide food, drinking water, new clothing, and the occasional shower, but what about the times those programs aren’t available? Most people are not comfortable covered in sweat between shower truck visits. I thought, ‘I can meet some need in the interim.’ And the idea for Safer Outside Project was born.
This is something that would have helped me when I was unhoused. This is a way I can give back.”
